Fences back then were made to keep people out as well, though these people may have been marauders or savages.

That's where palisades come into play. The typical fence post for a palisade consisted of a small-to-mid-sized tree trunk, which was aligned vertically with other tree trunks with no space between them. The tops would usually be shaped to a very sharp point and the fence itself would sometimes be reinforced.

Earthworks were an engineering branch that was often used in conjunction with palisades. It involved using this form of engineering to build the palisade fence to use unformed rock or massive quantities of soil to reinforce itself.

Palisade fences were commonly used when a fort was constructed quickly or when a castle did not have a stone wall surrounding it yet (This was very common in France during that time). Since the posts consisted of tree trunks, acquiring materials was an easy task, and these fences allowed for defense against small forces. The biggest weakness of the Palisade fence was the material. The wood was vulnerable to siege and fire attacks.

France, the Greeks and Romans often constructed palisade fences to defend their military camps. Roman historian Livy, however, felt the Greek palisade defenses were weaker than the Roman as the stakes they used for the fence posts were very large and heavy. Spacing was also an issue. These weaknesses allowed enemies to uproot the stakes and create gap in their defensive wall. The contrasting evidence shows that Rome used smaller and lighter stakes and placed them closer together. This made them ore difficult to uproot.
.

The use of palisade fences spread to the US as a variety of Mississippian settlements made use of the staked wall. The most common example is the Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, Illinois.

So in conclusion, building your own palisade fence is not recommended and if you feel like reenacting a 500 year old marauder raid on your lawn, then ask your Denver fence company about the history on palisade fences.
